NJ officer accused of luring 12-year-old girl

By SAMANTHA HENRY, Associated Press–16 hours ago

PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey police officer sent a 12-year-old girl explicit photos of himself in uniform and tried to set up a sexual encounter with her, days after meeting the girl while assisting her family in an unrelated police matter, authorities said Wednesday.

Woodland Park Police Officer Steven Vigorito Jr. pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges ranging from attempted aggravated sexual assault to luring and enticing a child. He was being held on $250,000 bail following his arrest while on duty Tuesday night. A message left after-hours for the public defender who represented him at the arraignment was not returned.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdes said the girl's mother complained to the police department on Monday that the officer had made inappropriate comments to her daughter, had given her his private cellphone number and had asked her to text him. Woodlawn Park Police Chief Anthony Galietti said they immediately contacted the prosecutor's office, whose detectives posed as the girl and started exchanging texts with Vigorito.

The texts became increasingly explicit over the course of several days, prosecutors said. Vigorito eventually texted the girl photographs in which he was exposing himself while wearing his police uniform and arranged to meet her for a sexual encounter, prosecutors alleged.

The girl was never in harm's way, and never exchanged texts with the officer, Valdes said.

"What is so disturbing about this, is the person who was to assist the family, ends up preying on the family," Valdes said.

The 39-year-old Vigorito has been with the police department for 12 years in Woodland Park, a small suburb about 15 miles from Manhattan. The town, known until a recent voter-approved name change as West Paterson, is a bucolic, leafy borough of neatly landscaped homes adjacent to Paterson, a grittier, more industrialized urban neighbor.

Vigorito, who New York television station WABC-7 reported is a married father of two, was arrested Tuesday night in the police station while on the night shift, according to Galietti, who said the patrolman was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

The arrest of one of the 25 officers on the force has shaken the small department, Galietti said.

"It's very upsetting, when you have one of your own do something like this. It's very upsetting," he said. Galietti added that department officials had acted immediately upon receiving the family's complaint about the officer, and had no hesitation in alerting the prosecutor's office.

"When this came to light we went into it head-on. We didn't care if it was one of our own," he said. "I'm the father of five kids, and this is wrong. It's a very inappropriate situation. Unfortunately, he (Vigorito) had a badge at the time."

Officer Robert Melia Jr, alleged child molester, alleged cow mollester

Moorestown, N. J. (The Weekly Vice) -- When a Moorestown police officer was arrested and accused of sexual assault against three little girls, Moorestown residents were horrified. But new charges have emerged that may show that this allegedly demented cop has reached a new, sickening low.

Robert Melia Jr., a 38 year old police officer with the Moorestown Police Department was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault. He has also been charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual contact.

Melia's former girlfriend, Heather Lewis was also arrested. She has been charged with three counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and one count of third-degree criminal sexual contact.

According to the Burlington County Prosecutors office, Melia and Lewis both sexually assaulted three minor girls in Melias home on multiple occassions beginning in 2003. Police say sexual assaults also occured in 2003, 2004 and 2007.

Now, prosecutors have filed additional charges against Robert Melia.

Prosecutors have now announced that Melia has been additionally charged with four counts of animal cruelty after allegedly engaging in sex acts with cows between June and December of 2006.

Robert Melia has been ordered held at the Burlington County Jail on $510,000 bail. An attempt from his attorney to reduce bail was denied by the judge.

His former girlfriend, Heather Lewis has been ordered held at the Women's Detention Center on $300,000 bond.

Officer In Child Porn Case Released on Bond

The Long Beach police officer, who is being investigated for allegedly soliciting graphic images via text from a teenager he met while on duty, had previously sued the city.

Long Beach police officer, Noe Yanez, 40, who was arrested for possession of child pornography Thursday, was released on bond the following day, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Lisa Massacani, LB police public information officer, told Patch that he was being held in lieu of $150,000 bail. However, the Los Angeles Times, which cited the sheriff's department as a source, reported the bail amount to be $20,000. In some cases, a judge may reduce the bail amount depending on the circumstances.

Yanez, a nine-year veteran, was arrested following an internal investigation by the Long Beach Police Department. At this time, it is unclear where the officer was stationed.

Police allege that Yanez first came into contact with the teenager during the course of his employment with the department and began contacting the minor via text messages.

As the communication between the two progressed, police allege that Yanez solicited inappropriate photographs of the victim. Sometime in April, the victim reported the incident to a school resource officer and LB police began an immediate investigation.

According to officials, significant resources--including multiple search warrants--were utilized to uncover the extent of contact between Yanez and the victim.

Sources familiar with case have told the Los Angeles Times that LB police detective have not ruled out the possibility of more victims. Department Investigators have gathered phone records and are attemptinging to identify the extent of Yanez’s activity, reported the LA Times.

The officer has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal and internal affairs investigation.

Yanez is also listed in a class action lawsuit filed by Long Beach police officers against the city in 2009, according to court documents given to the Long Beach Press-Telegram by City Attorney Bob Shannon three years ago. The officer was one of 56 others who filed a class-action lawsuit against the city in 2009.

The suit sought compensation for unpaid time while performing routine tasks, such as shaving, shining their boots or walking to debriefings, and was settled after the city agreed to pay 47 vacation hours to around 900 former and current officers, and pay $300,000 in attorney fees, according to the Press-Telegram.

The case cost the city more than $1 million in fees and other costs, according to a 2009 report by the Press-Telegram. Yanez had requested compensation for shaving.

Last year, an LB police officer was arrested after his wife found him having sex with a minor, reported the LA Times. Detective Erik Alvarez of Upland resigned and was convicted, receiving a two-year prison sentence for having a sexual relationship with the minor, who was 15-years-old when their relations began, the LA Times reported.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Justice System Integrity Division will handle the criminal prosecution against Yanez, said officials.

Long Beach cop arrested

Long Beach cop arrested for possession of child pornography

LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A Long Beach police idiot cop was arrested Thursday on suspicion of possession of child pornography.

The department said Idiot cop Noe Yanez met the victim while on the job and then asked the child for inappropriate pictures.

The child reported the incident to a school resource idiot cop, and then the Long Beach Police Department launched its investigation.

"Not only are the actions of this idiot cop a violation of the law, they are a violation of the community's trust, and a violation of the principles of this Department," said Chief Jim McDonnell. "The men and women of this Department take great pride in the good work they do everyday with the community, and we will not allow the actions of this one idiot cop to compromise that relationship."

Yanez, a nine-year employee at the department, was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Colo Spring Cop

Colo. Springs Cop Found Guilty On 21 Counts Of Child Porn,

The trial for Joshua Carrier, a 31-year-old former Colorado Springs police officer and volunteer wrestling coach at Horace Mann Middle School who was accused of molesting 22 boys and faced 207 counts of child exploitation, child sexual assault and possessing child pornography, has taken a surprising turn.

7News reports that the jury was unable to reach verdicts on most of the charges against him. Carrier was convicted only on child-pornography charges, 21 in total, but he was not convicted on any of the 36 molestation charges. The jury remained deadlocked on 150 other charges reaching no verdict.

The courtroom was surprised by the verdicts the jury reached. The jury forewoman, who only gave her first name of Julia, spoke with KRDO and tried to explain. She said that there were two jurors who would not agree with the other 10 jurors about convicting Carrier on the child sex abuse charges. She also said the trial was one of the most emotional, frustrating periods of her life.

District Attorney Dan May said he plans on re-trying Carrier on all the counts the jury could not reach a verdict on. If May does, he apparently has the cooperation of many of the children that took the stand in this trial KKTV reports that a lawyer representing parents in the case says the children are willing to take the stand again.

The defense maintained the argument that Carrier was simply performing his duties as wrestling coach, checking for skin diseases, like ringworm, that wrestlers are prone to become infected by. Carrier's defense attorneys also alleged that some of the children who testified--two of whom alleged that Carrier tried to masturbate them, while another alleged Carrier inserted a finger into his rectum while checking for appendicitis--were encouraged to lie for a court payout, according the Colorado Springs Gazette.

In May of 2011, Carrier was arrested for buying child pornography and then re-arrested a week later on suspicion of sexually assaulting several children. Before his arrest, Carrier was already the subject of an internal affairs review for showing his gun at a middle school sporting event (Carrier had been employed as a school resource officer and wrestling coach at Horace Mann Middle School in Colorado Springs prior to allegations of sex assault).

The Gazette spoke with an alleged victim's parent who said that when Carrier was working at Horace Mann as a wrestling coach he sexually abused her son under the pretense of examining the young boy for ringworm, a common wrestler illness.

Back in May, when Carrier was initially arrested, a Horace Mann student on the wrestling team made an anonymous statement to a CBS4 affiliate in Colorado Springs that Carrier placed his hands on student wrestler's bodies frequently when checking for ringworm:

He would actually take us into his own office one by one and touch us and look at us and stuff.

7News reported that Carrier had several assignments that placed him in situations with youth including a school resource officer at Horace Mann Elementary where he also served has wrestling coach, a coach for the Police Athletic League, and as an advisor to youth in the Explorer Scout Program.

Carrier worked for the Colorado Springs Police Department for seven years before he resigned in June 2011 amidst the assault and child pornography allegations.

A Long Beach police idiot cop has been arrested on suspicion of possession of child pornography after soliciting pictures from a minor, authorities said Friday.

Idiot cop Noe Yanez, a nine-year veteran of the department, came into contact with the minor in the course of his work and began contacting the victim via text messages, officials said in a statement. He subsequently solicited inappropriate photographs of the victim, they said.

The victim reported the incident to a school resource idiot cop in April, and the Long Beach Police Department launched an immediate investigation, they said.

Corpus Christi TX cop arrested

Corpus Christi TX cop arrested for allegedly coercing 15yr-old girl to engage in sex acts via internet [0] http://bit.ly/Hz2aAH

Lurid testimony opens trial of suspended Moorestown officer

Testimony began Thursday in the trial of a Moorestown police officer and his former girlfriend, who are accused of sexually assaulting three juvenile girls in his home over eight years, in one case allegedly videotaping their actions.

Robert Melia Jr., 42, who was suspended from his patrol job after his arrest in April 2008, sat in Superior Court in Mount Holly and scribbled continuously on a notepad as Assistant Burlington County Prosecutor Kevin Morgan gave sordid details of how Melia allegedly videotaped a blindfolded and bound girl being repeatedly violated with objects.

"Perhaps the most crucial piece of evidence was the video," Morgan told the jury, adding that the girl appeared to have been drugged.

Melia's girlfriend, Heather Lewis, whom the prosecution identified as the adult woman on the tape, is accused of assaulting the minor and forcing her to be her sexual partner.

Melia's lawyer, Mark Catanzaro of Moorestown, said the girl appeared to be an adult and had consented to the sex act. There was no evidence Melia was even present at the taping, he said.

The two other girls Melia and Lewis allegedly assaulted lied to police to deflect criticism about themselves and their troubled families, Catanzaro said.

"They conjured up a story," he said.

Testimony before Judge Charles Delehey began after opening arguments, with some jurors looking away when the discussion became graphic.

Morgan warned the panel they would need to see explicit photographs and the 35-minute video police extracted from Melia's computer.

"I apologize for the disturbing material," he said.

Lewis, 36, of Pemberton, took the girls to Melia's home in Moorestown to be "exploited" for the couple's "sexual amusement and enjoyment," Morgan said. Police were notified after one of the girls told her stepfather.

The first witness to testify was one of the alleged victims. She said she occasionally visited Melia's house to babysit Lewis' son from a previous relationship. The child is her cousin, said the woman, who is now 23.

"I would go there to play with him, babysit him. He was attached to me. I spent a lot of time there," she said.

But one night she awoke in the house to find Lewis sexually assaulting her, she testified. When she tried to move away, Melia held her back, she said.

Police said that during a search of Melia's home on Cottage Avenue, they also discovered video of Melia engaged in sexual acts with calves on a Burlington County farm. He was charged with animal cruelty, but a judge dismissed the counts in 2009, saying there was no evidence the animals had been tormented by the acts.

Melia and Lewis are standing trial on more than 40 counts each of aggravated sexual assault, sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a minor, invasion of privacy, and other charges related to the teens.

When the girls gave statements to police in April 2008, they said the incidents had begun in 2000. They had difficulty pinning down exact dates or how old they were.

The girls, two of whom are sisters, said they were between 12 and 17 when they were assaulted, separately, by Melia and Lewis. They told police the couple used vibrators on them and forced them to engage in sex acts with the adults.

The charges carry prison sentences in excess of 52 years for each defendant, the prosecutor said. Melia also is charged with official police misconduct, and Lewis faces charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy and forcing him to have sex with one of the girls.

Lewis' public defender, Bonnie Geller-Gorman, said her client was not "the monster" the prosecutor portrayed her to be.

Before she moved in with Melia, Lewis lived with the uncle of the two sisters. Lewis and that man had a baby and she often invited the girls to Melia's house to babysit or to visit their cousin, the lawyer said.

She knew the third girl through family and neighborhood ties in Pemberton, Geller-Gorman said. When Lewis learned the girl had been impregnated by her stepfather, she suggested the girl notify police, Geller-Gorman said. Instead, the girl concocted a story about being assaulted by Lewis and Melia, the lawyer said.

"It's all lies to protect her stepfather," Geller-Gorman said.

Lewis and Melia were jailed after their arrests, then released on bail. Their trial is expected to last up to three weeks.

Columbia police officer has been fired

Columbia police officer has been fired after being caught at a motel with an underage prostitute, said the spokesperson of the Richland County department.

32-year-old Mark A. Cornish was arrested after the police received a tip that a uniformed police officer was seen entering the motel with a girl that was known to the staff as a prostitute. It was later confirmed that she was only 17 years old.

Cornish fled in his patrol car when the deputies arrived at the motel, but he was found later that day just a couple of blocks from the motel. It turns out that this wasn’t the first encounter he had with this prostitute.

Police chief Randy Scott said that he initially wanted to wait until the investigation is over to decide about his course of action, but since Cornish refused to cooperate with the investigators, he chose to fire him immediately.

“You represent an agency, the community and what’s good in society,” said Scott, stating that this kind of behavior is unacceptable for a member of the police force.

Cornish’s Facebook page suggest that not only he’s a Chaplain candidate for the U.S. Army and deeply religious, but a married man as well.

Upshur County Sheriff’s deputy, Richard Louis Bridgewater

Upshur County Sheriff’s deputy, Richard Louis Bridgewater (29) is sentenced to eight years behind prison walls for molesting an 11-year-old girl. Late last year the victim told her friends about the molestation, and later on in an interview she said that he had touched her up to 20 separate times at his home. Bridgewater admitted this during a meeting with Texas Ranger Ronny Griffith. He was then placed in the Titus County Jail where he remained until he was sentenced. Bridgewater had to permanently surrender his police officer license. Attorney Billy Byrd said that Bridgewater got a fair punishment, and he thinks it’s going to be hard for the little girl to handle the traumas that the incident has brought her.

Former Mpls. cop sentenced for sex crimes

MINNEAPOLIS - The former Minneapolisk Police officer who was facing multiple sex crime charges was sentenced Monday to 18 years in prison and 10 years probation.

William Jacobs was charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly molesting a 15-year-old boy over a three-year period. In March, Jacobs reached a plea bargain and pled guilty to lesser charges of second degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of possession of child pornography.

On Monday, Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman said Jacobs' sentence is the best the county could hope for considering how much time has elapsed between the abuse and prosecution.

The charges stemmed from the molestation of a boy over a three-year period.

Prosecutors had said Jacobs inappropriately touched children as far back as the early 1960s.

Jacobs also previously taught at the Breck School in Golden Valley where he was also accused of sexual abuse

GRAND JUNCTION — A former Grand Junction police officer and firefighter has been arrested on allegations he repeatedly sexually assaulted a young girl.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports 42-year-old Eric Janusz surrendered Friday and faces several counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Police spokeswoman Kate Porras says the alleged abuse happened while Janusz was a patrol officer between 1996 and 2006. No other details were released because the arrest affidavit is sealed.

Janusz left the department in 2006 and joined the city's fire department, which he left in February due to a workers' compensation separation.

The newspaper reports a man who answered Janusz's cellphone Friday declined to identify himself and hung up. The complaint was filed in the fall, and the accuser is now an adult.

Ex-Fox Lake Police Chief Charged With Repeated Sex Assault

DODGE COUNTY, Wis. (WTAQ) - A former police chief in Dodge County is due in court Thursday on charges that he sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl in 1989 and stalked three people.

54-year-old Patrick Lynch was arrested Wednesday, after the state Justice Department filed 4 felony counts against him. Lynch ran the Fox Lake police force for 23 years before resigning in February of 2009.

A woman who’s now 28 told investigators that Lynch sexually assaulted her 21 years ago in the bathroom of her family’s home. The woman also said Lynch later kept showing up at 2 banks where she worked, and would drive his police car past her home.

Lynch is also accused of stalking a woman who used to work for the Fox Lake Police Department – as well as a man who was dating his ex-wife.

Lynch was suspended for 4 days after he reportedly hit the man until he fell to the ground, and then kicked him in the head during a scuffle. Authorities said that happened in 2007 at the ex-wife’s apartment.

Some charges dropped against embattled Readstown chief

Some charges dropped against embattled Readstown chief

VIROQUA — The two most significant felony charges facing Readstown Police Chief Shay Larson were dismissed Wednesday afternoon.

Prosecutors dropped charges of sexual assault of a child and intimidating a witness, saying new evidence would make it hard to prove the case.

A boy had accused Larson of touching him after he saw media reports that Larson had been charged with other crimes.

Larson still faces two other felonies and six misdemeanors, stemming from what investigators say was a pattern of using his badge to commit crimes and leverage sexual favors.

“I believe that ethically I could not go forward at this time” on the latest charges, Vernon County District Attorney Timothy Gaskell said. He declined to discuss specifics.

Larson’s attorney, Luis Delgado, said he was thankful the charges were dismissed.

Still, the district attorney continues to pursue other charges.

A witness testified at a preliminary hearing Wednesday that Larson knew she was driving drunk, and rather than arrest her, Larson encouraged her to rendezvous with him in the village park.

Larson’s attorney said the chief was merely using discretion by not arresting the woman.

Gaskell said there’s a difference between discretion and dereliction.

“All officers have discretion whether to cite people or not,” Gaskell said. “But they do not have discretion, your honor, to allow people to continue down the road, right after they’ve had contact with them, knowing that they are committing an illegal act.”

Larson also has been accused of pressuring a woman to give him oral sex in a downtown business and encouraging others to cover up his alleged misdeeds.

Meanwhile, Larson is still employed as the village’s only law enforcement officer.

He has continued to receive a paycheck since being placed on administrative leave last fall when a criminal investigation began.
