Savannah-Chatham Metro Police officer has been charged with felony
computer child exploitation in connection with the case.
A retired Savannah police officer was arrested Wednesday in
connection with a multi-agency Internet child pornography investigation,
according to the Savannah Morning News.
Douglas Burkhalter, 70, was charged with felony computer
child exploitation, the Morning News reported. Burkhalter once commanded the
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police's special operations unit. He retired from the
police force about six years ago, according to the Morning News.
Burkhalter was one of 98 suspects identified during the
three-month investigation, according to the report. The investigation was
headed up by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Internet Crimes
Against Children Task Force. Warrants were served Wednesday in 37 counties as
part of the investigation, the Morning News reported.
