Galveston deputy jailed on child sex charge

GALVESTON – A Galveston County deputy was arrested Monday on charges of aggravated sexual assault on a child in Grand Prairie, a Galveston County sheriff's spokesman said.Miguel Zapata, 44, a deputy at the Galveston County jail since September 2010, was arrested in Galveston and taken to the jail where he worked, sheriff's spokesman Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said. Zapata's bail was set at $100,000.
Officers from the sheriff's Office of Professional Standards are investigating to determine Zapata's employment status, Tuttoilmondo said.
Tuttoilmondo said details of the investigation were unavailable. Detectives at the Grand Prairie Police Department could not be reached for comment.
Grand Prairie officers told the Galveston Sheriff's Office on Monday about the charges and Zapata was arrested in Galveston, Tuttoilmondo said.
He said Zapata would transferred to the Dallas County Jail within days.
